Architecture - to create a meeting place in their school yard

Subject: Arts & crafts

Task
The task is for the students to create/design a meeting place in their school yard. They are to consider different architectural features, as well as accessibility, sustainability, and a democratic approach to the design process. They make models of the product. The students are assessed formatively throughout the process, and the finished product becomes a part of the summative assessment at the end.

The students have to analyse the needs of the students in school before they start the design process. The project needs to consider:

• Climate
• How the space will be experienced
• Artistic features
• If the space is inclusive and promotes being social

In addition, the space needs seating and parts of it needs to have a roof.

The students hand in the following documentation throughout the process:

• Development of ideas
• Documentation of process
• A model measured 1:25
• Digital poster presenting the project

Assessment

The task is assessed by the use of the rubric (see below). The rubric is accessible to all the students throughout the year in One Note, and is constantly being used, and leaves room for more thorough feedback. The criteria in the rubric are repeated in all assessments throughout the year so students are familiar with these. The students also receive assessment criteria specific for this project, where the following can be seen in line with citizenship education: “Skills” in the RFCDC butterfly model (figure 2):

The student:

• Can develop ideas and find solutions
• Has a clear link between design and the needs of the users
• Is independent and solve problems as the occur
• Makes it clear how the needs of the users are met
• Can reflect over the use of colours and how they affect people

Cross curricular topics:

Sustainability: This project works with sustainability and sustainable solutions. The students decide on a placement of the meeting spot based on a sustainable solution, and they have to make sustainable choices in the build when it comes to choosing materials, the actual building process etc.
Democracy and citizenship: the project triggers critical reflection. They have to express their own experiences, thoughts and opinions. They have to visualize the by interpreting their surroundings and participate in changes.
Health and life skills: The students have to develop the ability to creative thoughts processes and practical problem solving. They will encounter challenges, and need to see possibilities and create ideas in different arenas.
