Memory is alive because it bears witness
1. School/Organization, where the practice is collected:
Various schools and organizations in Lithuania.
2. Description
With the civil initiative "Memory is alive because it bears witness", we remember January 1991, when the citizens of Lithuania, driven by the pursuit of unity and freedom, achieved a historic victory. The nation resisted the aggression of the Soviet occupiers and local collaborators and the attempt to carry out a coup by military force and defended the Independence of the restored state.
in 2023 The civic initiative "Memory is alive because it bears witness" was held in Lithuania for the sixteenth time. Every year, the commemoration takes on a new, special meaning, because generations change and, according to a phrase heard in the media, "generations born in freedom know the events of January only from history textbooks and scant documentary footage." Therefore, it is very important to convey the message to the young generation about the importance and meaning of the events of 13 January 1991 for our country.
The symbol of the initiative is a candle, which symbolizes life, light, justice, memory and unity.
Place: institutions, organizations, homes of all Lithuanian residents. If working remotely - let's light candles at the windows in our home.
This citizenship initiative has been organized since 2008, when more than 100 schools organized commemorations. The number of educational institutions and other institutions supporting this initiative increases every year. Since 2010, the initiative "Memory is alive because it bears witness" has been actively supported not only by Lithuanian general education schools, but also by embassies of the Republic of Lithuania abroad, embassies of foreign countries in Lithuania, our state institutions: the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, the Presidency of the Republic of Lithuania, the National Guard Ministry, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education and Science, museums, libraries, hospitals, police stations, border checkpoints and many other institutions and organizations.
